Episode 101 – Sam Adegoke On The Nuance of Self-Identity

TL;DR | In this episode, Stacy talks to the always insightful Sam Adegoke about the beauty and nuances that make up self- identity, conquering fear, and they share stories about their similar experiences as Nigerian-Americans.

This conversation was so important to me because it tackled the beautiful complexities of identity. As a Nigerian - American, Christian, creative, woman, sister, daughter, friend, etc - I have been on a journey of combing through my identity and peaking behind all my unanswered questions. Day after day, we are asked to check a box on every form, at every interview, on every dating app, etc, that we start limiting ourselves to the boxes that we check. We are all MORE than one thing. The faster we start believing that for ourselves, the faster we can help someone else believe it too, but truthfully this takes time. In the state of America right now which has a ripple effect across the globe, we are being forced to meet the makeup of our identities. What do I believe and why? Who told me I must believe this and how do they benefit / profit if I do? How much have I shrunk myself to fit into a box? When did I not take accountability because it was uncomfortable? What parts of myself do I leave out during a celebration? Which parts do I amplify during trying times?

I know.

These questions are definitely NOT easy but oh are they important. You deserve to discover. And if you are breathing in this moment, you have to *shrugs shoulders.* Not just for yourself, (which is imperative in itself) but because your life serves a greater purpose whether you realize it or not. If you don’t, I believe that for you. I believe that the orchestration of this world is precise and also magical. I believe Gods vision for your life is so much greater than your fears and the only way to get though it, is to go through it. I hope as you listen to this episode you find solidarity in the “we are all figuring it out” movement. i repeat, We are ALL figuring it out.

Please, KEEP GOING.

EPISODE 201 REFLECTION QUESTION

QUESTION | If Not Now, Then When?

STACY’S REPLY
This question is never easy. I’ve said before “I'm waiting for the right time only to find out, the right time never comes. It sucks really. As I reflect on this question, human2human comes to mind. I waited several times with this show. I kept thinking there would be a better time...but the only time I actually had was the present. So here we are, me with you connecting through this dream that I had previously put on hold. Use my example. Don’t wait. We can't bank on the when, all we really have is now.
